It Gets Better

Summary: They all pretend to know what they're doing. But honestly, each and every one of them is playing a guessing game. Their surroundings, their own opinions, and everything in between determines their lives. They barely get a say in anything.
For LGBTQ kids and allies, it's not always easy. They get harassed, called out, tortured, and some of them are ready to take it sitting down and give up. From the out and the proud to the ones still hiding in the closet, the teens struggle every day to find something to hold on to. In the end of course, it gets better. But it certainly doesn't start that way.
This novel is dedicated, first and foremost, to its inspiration. Chris Colfer is an incredibly inspiring young man. He, along with Darren Criss, Max Adler, Ryan Murphy, and Dan Savage are the main reasons I even began writing this. The real life people who go through hatred and prejudice and bullying every day of their lives are the reason I finished it.
Even though the amazing men listed above will most likely never read this, they are truly gifts from God. They make me strive to be a better person every day and I am so, so grateful that I got to experience their strength and passion and creativity in my lifetime.
I can say, with no exaggeration, that Chris Colfer played a part in saving my life. It’s not possible to thank him enough and even though he doesn’t know it, I’m certainly not the only one he’s helped.
To the real life adolescents, teens, and even adults who struggle every day to find something to live for because of what is going on in their lives, this book is for you. To the people out there with abusive parents, bullies, homophobic, racist, bigoted, or generally hateful environments. To the people living today that feel alone, unloved, or scared. To the people that need motivation to get out of bed because you’re too scared to go to school or work because of what people might say behind your back.
I’m going to share with you something that the amazing men above have taught me:
It gets better.
WARNING:
This book makes references to:
Suicide,
Attempted suicide,
And non-consensual sex.
This book contains all of the following:
Possible triggers to self harm,
Violence,
Bullying,
Language,
Homophobic slurs that the author heavily disapproves of and hopes she never has to write again,
An excessive amount of same-sex romance because there’s just not enough of it in novels today,
And a happy ending.

Chapter 2 - Phillip, PRIDE
Chapter 3 - Derek, CONFIDENCE
