Harry Potter vs. Twilight
Okay, people, let's be honest. Harry Potter is a literary masterpiece. The stories are well thought out, the characters are creative, the mix of social and magical life is splendid, and it's very, very exciting. The most exciting moments in Twilight are wondering when Bella and Edward will next kiss. (By the way, can't take credit for that statement. All laughs go to a cool guy, Rohan.) Now, a review of Twilight said, "Move over Harry Potter." When I was younger and really into these books, I thought that was a great way to state how well written they were and how exciting they were. No offense to Stephenie Meyer, whom I'm sure is a very nice person, but did she really have to make Edward so much of a creeper? And why, why oh why, do they SPARKLE?
Vampires are supposed to be bloodthirsty killing machines, not romantic heart throbs.
Harry Potter is still one of my favorite book series, though I read it more than 7 years ago. I reread the book when I'm bored because they never disappoint. I still love those books. The excitement for me from Twilight died down long before the final installment, Breaking Dawn, was out.
On a more fair note, the character development was very good. The story was new and inventive, an interesting twist on vampires as Stephenie Meyer saw it. But, honestly, you can't say anything about vampires until you've read Bram Stoker's Dracula. Seriously.

Let's take a look at the characters. Harry, teen boy, unloving family, parents are dead. Bella, teen girl, frustrating but loving family, parents divorced. Harry is dealing with the fact that, hey, he's a wizard. Bella is dealing with her dad and her selflessness. Pause button. NOBODY IS SELFLESS. The character was flawed with balance issues and some sort of neurotic bravery, which was enduring for a while, but then I realized she was so bloody annoying. Nobody is selfless. Not like that. Very unrealistic in my opinion.
The argument could be made that Twilight appeals more to girls because of the romance and there isn't much romance in Harry Potter. That's totally fine. But Harry Potter has romance, it's just not excessive. Plus, Harry Potter has a wider audience because boys AND girls like it. I know maybe three or four guys that read Twilight, and that was only because they thought it would have bloodthirsty monsters in it. Not some stalker who, again I say it, SPARKLES.
I thought Stephenie Meyer's death of a vampire thing was very creative. Must cut 'em up and burn 'em. Coolio. But, still, the old stake through the heart, garlic, sun, et cetera, is more of a favorite to me.
So, as a closing note, vampires are vampires, leave them be. Witches and wizards should, in my opinion, forever belong to the literary genius that is J. K. Rowling. Harry Potter will forever be the book series that changed my life (The Sorcerer's Stone was the book that got me hooked on reading. Believe it or not, I used to hate to read and now I go crazy if I can't get a new book every week) and Twilight will be the pimple on the face of my generation.
That is all.
